Samaritans provides confidential support to anyone feeling down and depressed or struggling to cope. Its volunteers can be contacted round the clock by phone, email, or face-to-face at one of their branches.
What can I do as a volunteer?
Volunteering with Samaritans at Christmas depends on the needs of each of its 201 branches. You can't become a volunteer just for Christmas - you have to make a long-term commitment to the charity.
Volunteers are involved at all levels of the organisation and opportunities for volunteering include fundraising, administration and supporting the charity at events. One of the main roles at Samaritans is becoming a listening volunteer. This is where you will provide invaluable support to thousands of people who contact Samaritans for help.
How much time can I do it for?
As a listening volunteer you’ll need to dedicate a certain number of hours each week to the charity (this depends on the particular branch) including one night shift each month. Essential and in-depth training lasts six weeks, followed by a period of time where you will be mentored by a fellow volunteer.

Victim Support gives free and confidential help across England and Wales to victims of crime, witnesses, their family, friends and anyone else affected. The charity is also a voice for victims and witnesses and campaigns for change.
What can I do as a volunteer?
Unfortunately, crime doesn’t stop over Christmas and volunteers are vital to deliver the charity's services. You could help by supporting victims in your community, support witnesses at court, or volunteer on its support line (based in London). You can even specialise in supporting vulnerable members of the community.
Victim Support also needs volunteers to help as trainers and office helpers, and to promote the charity at local events and groups.
How much time can I do it for?
It really depends on the role and your availability. Volunteers who work with victims usually need to commit about two hours a week, support line volunteers about one shift a week (about four hours) and witness service volunteers about one day every fortnight.
