Older people

WRVS has a great history of service to local communities

What can I do as a volunteer?

You could be delivering hot meals which are all the more important during the winter months, or perhaps helping at one of the local clubs or visiting an older person. Whatever you choose to do, you will be making a big difference to someone in your community.

How much time can I do it for?

You can literally give one or two hours a week but the more time the better!

How do I apply?

If you'd like to improve the lives of lonely older people while drinking lots of tea, enjoying a slice of cake and sharing stories, Contact the Elderly would like to hear from you!

What can I do as a volunteer?

As Christmas approaches, there's no better time to start thinking about how you can make a difference to the lives of older people in your community. Contact the Elderly tackles the acute loneliness and isolation experienced by many older people by organising small monthly Sunday afternoon tea parties.

Volunteer drivers collect the guests from home and accompany them to the tea parties, which are hosted by volunteers. The group is warmly welcomed  by a different host each month, who offers a simple tea in his or her own home. Stories are shared, memories refreshed and the afternoons are always full of conversations and laughter. It's a great way for the older guests to form new friendships and reduce the loneliness felt by so many.

What is the commitment?

All you need to host a party is a downstairs toilet, easy access to your home and a large teapot!  You'd need to hold two tea parties in your home during the year.

As a volunteer driver you’ll need a full, clean driving licence and be able to commit to one Sunday afternoon tea party a month.

But please remember - Contact the Elderly is an ongoing volunteer initiative, with volunteers required to commit to tea parties all year round, not just during the festive period.
