LGBT

LGBT stands for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender. Various organisations come under the LGBT banner working around issues such as health, education and equal rights. Certain LGBT organisations do ask for their volunteers to personally identify with one of these categories but most are simply looking for people who are committed to the cause.

As well as trying the organisations below you could get in touch with local LGBT groups in community centres and universities.

  • The London Lesbian and Gay Switchboard provides information and support for lesbians, gay men, bisexual, trans people and anyone who needs to consider issues around their sexuality.  They are looking for LGB volunteers to answer calls to their helpline.
  • Based in Manchester the Lesbian and Gay Foundation’s tagline is ‘Ending Homophobia, Empowering People.’  They have a real variety of volunteer roles on offer including photography, counselling and fundraising.
  • Stonewall are the LGB campaigning charity behind the ‘some people are gay – get over it’ slogan. Join their team of dedicated volunteers.
  • Gendered Intelligence hold awareness workshops for trans youth as well as professionals to educate people around issues of gender.

If you’re in Scotland and would like to be a role model for young people who are LGBT try contacting LGBT Youth about their adult volunteering.
