Older people

There are over 20 million people aged over 50 in the UK. And as you’d expect, there are an amazing number of ways to volunteer to support older people.

You’ll probably need to search locally to see what’s on offer in your area, but the large national organisations are a good place to start. They rely on the support of thousands of volunteers.

  • Age UK - Age Concern and Help the Aged have joined forces to help older people enjoy a better life. Lots on offer, from being a befriender to a swimming monitor.
  • WRVS – over 45,000 men and women already give up their time to offer help to older people and to make life better in their communities. Get involved in community transport schemes, hospital cafes and good neighbours local services.
  • Contact the Elderly organises Sunday afternoon tea parties for people over 75. Host your own afternoon of tea, cake and companionship once a year or drive one or two members to the tea party.
  • Alzheimer’s Society – volunteer with the UK's leading care and research charity for people with dementia and those who care for them. Lots of roles on offer from advice and information, campaigning, research and helping out with the media.
