Refugees or asylum seekers

Refugees need support to understand how life works in the UK, get to grips with the education system or just learn how to use the local library or transport system.

You can search locally for projects near you, but these organisations should also be able to help.

  • Refugee Action has offices around the county and volunteers are assigned specific roles within ranging from admin and research, to interpreting, befriending and mentoring refugees.
  • Refugee Council relies on volunteers to teach English, coach football, serve lunch and write for the newsletter. Find out what’s on offer at one of their centres in Barnsley, Birmingham, Hull, Ipswich, Leeds, London, Norwich, Peterborough and Sheffield.
  • British Red Cross –help a stranger in a strange land? British Red Cross volunteers help thousands of vulnerable people – including unaccompanied children – adjust to life in a new country and access vital services.

If you’re a student, get in touch with STAR (Student Action for Refugees) STAR groups provide practical support to refugees and asylum seekers in their communities through volunteering projects with local refugee organisations.
